Facts and science behind deepavali*(INDIAN FESTIVAL)

 Facts and science behind deepavali
The word Deepavali is a combination of two words, deep (lamp) + avali (row). Thus deepavali is a line or a row of lamps so during the festival of Deepavali (also known as Diwali), lamps are lit everywhere. It is celebrated on four consecutive days - the thirteenth, the fourteenth and the new moon day of the dark fortnight of the Hindu lunar month Ashvin and the first day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month Kartik. These days are celebrated as Dhanatrayodashi, Narakchaturdashi, Lakshmipujan and Balipratipada respectively.

The first story is from Ramayan, which describes Diwali as the day when Lord Ram returned victoriously to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravan of Lanka. Lord Ram was given an arousing welcome, and the entire city dazzled with Diyas. This was later celebrated as an annual festival called Deepavali or Diwali.

The second reference is related to Lord Krishna. Once there was an evil demon called Narakasura, who was a tyrant and was forever oppressing the common people. All of them prayed to Lord Krishna to relieve them from his clutches. Thus, Lord Krishna came and after an intense battle, he killed Narakasura using his Sudarshan Chakra. The people rejoinced, lit the city with lamps, and this incident came to be annually celebrated as Diwali.

If you look at the common thread between these 2 legends, it portrays the victory of good over evil, of light eclipsing the darkness, and of righteousness holding forth against all odds. Thus, the Diwali festival is a very symbolic one that extols us to kill our inner demons (negativities) and purify our soul by lighting it up with goodness.

Some exclude the thirteenth day and consider only the remaining three days as Deepavali. Since the festival of Vasubaras (a celebration held in the honour of cows) and Bhaubij (a festival honouring the bond between brother and sister) respectively precede and follow Deepavali they are included as a part of Deepavali. However, in reality, these are separate holy festivals.

The science behind celebrating Deepavali

1. During the four months preceding Deepavali, the absolute fire principle (tej tattva) is almost absent in the atmosphere. As a result of this, in earlier times, mighty demons used to dominate and trouble the masses. To be able to counter their threat effectively, Deepavali, which is the worship based on the absolute fire principle, was celebrated. So Deepavali stands for destroying the distressing elements that dominate the environment, with the absolute fire principle.

2. Science behind Abhynga Snan

The tradition of abhyang snan' or the ritualistic bath, is as much a beauty regimen as part of the festivities. The idea is to nourish the skin with a layer of Ayurvedic oil and fragrant utana or powdered herbs. This traditional Diwali-morning bath ushers in the most important day of the festival Laxmi Puja, which will be observed this year on Friday.

It's not all about rituals; there is a lot of Ayurvedic science behind the abhyang snan. Keeping the winter in mind, the special abhyang oils contain elements that repair cracked skin.

"It has been seen that abhyang oils curtail problems arising due to cracking of the skin and curb the ageing process. These oil are known to control obesity, and also enhance the fat element in extremely thin people," says perfumer Prasad Gaanu of Manohar Sugandhi.

3. Science behind Crackers. After rainy seasons lot of creatures like mosquito are born the smell of of sulpher drives away from the residential areas. The Sulpher acts anti biotic for the skin diseases which are expected due to dry skin.

On the day of Lakshmipujan (worshipping the Goddess Lakshmi), rituals are undertaken to drive off poverty (Alakshmi).

The first day of the bright fortnight of Kartik (Balipratipada) is celebrated to symbolise Lord Vishnu's conquest over the demon king, Bali.

Bhaubij celebrates the slaying of the evil demon Shakatasur by Sri Krishna and the Bliss experienced by the multitudes of women He liberated from the demon's clutches. It also said Yama went to meet his sister Yumana on this day hence it is celebrates the divine bond of love between brother and sister.

Our culture tells us that every day of Deepavali represents the conquest of good over evil, piousness over immorality and virtue over vice; all illuminated by the Deepavali lamps.

Today, Deepavali is celebrated in such a way, that it shows, that all the above has unfortunately either been forgotten or just remained as a namesake. Hence we are losing on an opportunity of getting the full benefit of the divine consciousness (chaitanya) that is integral to all our festivals and celebrations.

Gambler’s Excuse to Gamble

One of the not-so-great aspects of Diwali is gambling. It goes back to a dice game that the goddess Parvati played with her husband. She said that on this night, any gambler should do well. On top of that, there’s also saying something about the threat of being re-born as a donkey if you do not gamble during Diwali. As a result, gambling is very popular for this week.

Some Helpful Eye Care Tips

With so many of us spending lots of time in front of the computer every day it comes to no surprise that research is showing a rise in visual problems. What can one do? First, it’s important to find out how you can protect your eyes through eye health exams and by making a few minor changes in your computer viewing habits.

Here are some helpful Eye Care Tips -

Positioning is everything
 Correct positioning of your computer, keyboard and typing copy is essential. Your screen should be positioned about an arm’s length from your eyes and 20 degrees below eye level. Consider foot and wrist rests for added comfort.

Lighting can make all the difference
 Room lighting should be diffuse, not direct, to reduce glare and reflections from your screen. Look into an internal or external glare screen and be sure to set your colour, contrast and brightness levels to suit you.

A little extra help for your glasses
 Anti-reflective coatings on the lenses of your glasses can be applied by your optometrist to reduce discomfort and to ease reduced vision from bright and/or flickering light sources such as VDTs and fluorescent lights. And don’t forget, your doctor of optometry can talk to you about eyeglasses designed specifically for people who use computers a lot.

Take time out, our 20-20-20 rule
 Step I :-
 After every 20 minutes of looking into the computer screen, turn your
 head and try to look at any object placed at least 20 feet away. This
 changes the focal length of your eyes, a must-do for the tired eyes.
 Step II :-
 Try and blink your eyes for 20 times in succession, to moisten them.
 Step III :-
 Time permitting of course, one should walk 20 paces after every 20 minutes
 of sitting in one particular posture. Helps blood circulation for the entire body.

It’s all in the blinking
 Did you know that on average we blink 12 times per minute? But wait, did you know that when we’re on the computer we only blink 5 times per minute? That can add up to dry eyes. Relieve the discomfort by using artificial tear drops or gels and remember to blink!

Palming
 Sit straight at your workstation and rub your palms against each other till you feel them warm. The warmth of your palms helps soothe and relax tired eyes. Then, lightly cup your eyes with your palms and relax for 60 seconds. Count the seconds in your mind. Repeat this exercise two to three times whenever your eyes feel tired, or as often as you want. While palming, you can either rest your elbows on your desk or keep away from the desk and cup your eyes. Both ways are fine.

Splash water on your face
 During breaks, splash water on your face while closing your eyes. This has an overall relaxing effect and helps you feel refreshed.

Use tea bags
 Keep two used tea bags in the refrigerator before you leave for work. Once you are home, place the tea bags on your eyes for a few minutes as you relax. This not only soothes tired eyes, but also reduces puffiness.

Eat healthy
 Incorporate Vitamins A, C, and E on a daily basis; eat citrus fruits, green leafy veggies, tomatoes, spinach, poultry and dairy products. Pack a box of chopped carrots, cucumber and fresh fruits and munch in-between meals at the office.

8 Effective Cold Prevention Strategies

1. Wash your hands – The world we live in is filled with viruses and bacteria that can make us ill. Your hands are no exceptions. Wash your hands often to keep them clean. If you cannot wash them, at least use some hand sanitizer, such as Purel.

2. Drink hot fluids, especially in the morning – The rhinovirus incubates in the back of the throat and spreads in the upper respiratory area because it’s cooler than the body temperature. Rhinovirus can’t survive at 98.6 (hence it doesn’t travel far down into the bronchi or the lungs). By drinking hot fluid (such as hot tea and lemon) you can prevent the virus from incubating.

3. Keep your hands out of your face – We have already discussed the germs and viruses on your hands. You cannot wash them continuously, so in between washings keep your hands out of your face. Your face is an open portal to your insides. Keep the germs away from your portal.

4. Drink water- Drinking more water is my answer to everything. Water will help clean out your body and keep it clean. It will also keep your body functioning at 100%. You should drink at least (eight) 8oz glasses of water everyday. This will also help you lose weight.

5. Eat your fruits and vegetables – There are phytochemicals and antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that can help strengthen your immune system and prevent diseases. You should eat at least four servings of vegetables and two servings of fruits every day.

6. Multivitamins – If you are not eating all of your fruit and vegetable servings, you should take a multivitamin to ensure you are getting all of the vitamins your body needs to function properly. Take a simple one-a-day multivitamin everyday.

7. Stay warm – Being cold weakens your immune system and makes your body more susceptible to illness. Look at the day’s temperature at weather.com before leaving your home. Wear layers in and out of your home when it is cold.

8. Relax and rest – Stress weakens your immune system. You can reduce your stress levels by relaxing and getting more sleep. Sleep is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system. Sleep will also boost your recovery time if you become ill.

Recycle Bin in Quick Launch

This is a Recycle Bin for the Quick Launch Toolbar, it’s a “Folder Shortcut” (look here for more info).
 The Icon changes when it’s full or empty and when you merge “Add Empty Bin.reg” it adds the “Empty Recycle Bin” command (in your language) to the Right Click Menu.
 It’s also possible to see the contents of the Recycle Bin (see screenshot): unlock the Taskbar and place your cursor over the left most part of the Quick Launch toolbar so the arrow changes to the double sided arrow, left click and drag it to the right till it covers the Recycle Bin. Click on » and the menu will expand similar to Start/Programs.

Enable Advanced Disk Performance

When enabled, the hard disk drive operates in write-back cache mode, in which all the data that gets written to the drive is first stored in the cache, and then later written to the disk. Both writes and reads are cached in this case. When disabled, the HDD operates in write-through cache mode, in which all data that gets written to the drive is immediately written to the disks and also stored in the cache. Writes are not cached, but reads are.

Note: This setting is recommended only for disks with a backup power supply, it further improves disk performance, but it also increases the risk of data loss if the disk loses power.

Open Device Manager, expand Disk drives, right-click on a Disk drive, click Properties, click the Policies tab, select the Enable advanced performance check box, and then click OK.

5 Myths About Drinking Water

Myth 1: Drink Eight Glasses Each Day

Scientists say there’s no clear health benefit to chugging or even sipping water all day. So where does the standard advice of drinking eight glasses each day come from? Nobody really knows,  a kidney expert at the University of Pennsylvania.

Myth 2: Drinking Lots of Water Helps Clear Out Toxins

The kidneys filter toxins from our bloodstreams. Then the toxins clear through the urine. The question is, does drinking extra water each day improve the function of the kidneys?

 In fact, drinking large amounts of water surprisingly tends to reduce the kidney’s ability to function as a filter. It’s a subtle decline, but definite.

Myth 3: Lots of Water Equals Healthier Skin

The body is already 60 percent water. So, if you take a 200-pound man, he’s 120 pounds of water.
 Adding a few extra glasses of water each day has limited effect. It’s such a tiny part of what’s in the body. It’s very unlikely that one’s getting any benefit. His full editorial is published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
 One study published in 2007 on the cosmetic benefit of drinking water suggests that 500 ml of water increases capillary blood flow in the skin. But it’s unclear whether these changes are clinically significant.

Myth 4: Drinking Extra Water Leads to Weight Loss

A more accurate statement may be: Drinking water is a helpful tool for dieters.
 Water is a great strategy for dieters because it has no calories, says Madeline Fernstrom of the University of Pittsburgh. So you can keep your mouth busy without food and get the sense of satisfaction.
 But water is not magical, she adds. Other zero-calorie options such as diet sodas are fine, too.

Myth 5: It’s Easy to Get Dehydrated During a Workout

Dehydration sets in when a person has lost 2 percent of his or her body weight. So for a 200-pound man, this means losing 4 pounds of water.
 Marathon runners, bikers and hikers all need to recognize the signs of dehydration. It is also obvious that individuals in hot, dry climates have increased need for water.The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that athletes drink 16 ounces of fluids a couple of hours before starting sports practice. But for a stroll in the park, no water bottle is necessary.

How does the Light Bulb Works ?

A guide to the function of light bulbs, including insights into the history and science this household device.

A light bulb is a device for the conversion of electrical energy into visible light. The first practical light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison at his Menlo Park laboratory. Prior to this there was electric light available, but only electric arc lights, which had many problems. Edison’s goal in making his own electric light was to create a light that was safe, cheap, and would not cause the whole circuit to fail with the failure of one light. The arc lights available when Edison began work on his own electric light were wired in series, so the failure of any one of them would cause the whole circuit to fail.

When current passes through a modern light bulb, it goes through a series of connectors set up to deliver the current to a carbon-based filament in the center of the bulb. This filament has a high resistance to electric current, so, as the current passes through it, the filament heats. Soon the filament is so hot it begins to glow – this is called incandescence, and it is where the light from an incandescent light bulb comes from. So long as current keeps going through the filament it is kept hot enough to keep glowing providing the light with which we are so familiar.

How does the Light Bulb Works

The single biggest difficulty that Edison faced while working to develop his incandescent light bulb was finding a filament that would be three things: first it had to display the proper incandescent properties – without that it was just a fancy resistor that didn’t do anything worthwhile; second it had to be cheap enough to mass produce – several of Edison’s early filaments would incandesce quite well, but the use of platinum filaments would have been prohibitively expensive; finally it had to last for a reasonable period of time – a filament that burned out after 10 or 20 hours of use would be of only limited appeal to the consumer, no matter how safe or bright it might be.

Eventually after testing several thousand different materials for the desired properties Edison settled on the carbon fiber that his assistant Latimer had formulated. Eventually Latimer created a process for the mass manufacture of his filament. The first light bulbs were good for about 50 hours of incandescence, but advances in the filaments have progressed so that Edison found a filament that would provide light for 1200 hours, and today the average life of an incandescent bulb is about 1500 hours.

The modern incandescent bulb no longer uses Latimer’s carbon fiber, but a coiled tungsten wire as the light emitting filament. Coatings on the inner surfaces of the bulb also makes for a more “˜gentle’ or “˜soft’ light than the original bare bulbs provided. However the modern incandescent bulb remains only a series of incremental improvements on Edison’s original.

There is some room for controversy about the true inventor of the incandescent bulb. The original incandescent light bulb was displayed by an English scientist by the name of Swan in 1860. The problem was that Swan’s 1860 bulb didn’t have a strong enough vacuum to last very long, and his batteries weren’t strong enough to produce sufficient current to actually generate incandescence. In 1875 he returned to the idea of the incandescent light bulb, and produced a working prototype in 1878. His light bulb, according to some, was the model that Edison copied to produce his own light bulb. Swan may have invented the incandescent light bulb, even to using a carbon fiber, it is Edison who first produced a commercially viable product, hence the hedge at the beginning of this article about Edison inventing the “˜practical’ light bulb.

What’s A Web Proxy Server?

What is a proxy server, and how do they work?

Proxies are store-and-forward caches. When you configure your web browser to use a proxy, it never connects to the URL. Instead, it always connects to the proxy server, and asks it to get the URL for you. Proxies can be used as a sort of firewall, because it isolates you from connecting to the Internet.

How does a proxy server work?

A proxy server receives a request for an Internet service (such as a Web page request) from a user. If it passes filtering requirements, the proxy server, assuming it is also a cache server, looks in its local cache of previously downloaded Web pages. If it finds the page, it returns it to the user without needing to forward the request to the Internet. If the page is not in the cache, the proxy server, acting as a client on behalf of the user, uses one of its own IP addresses to request the page from the server out on the Internet. When the page is returned, the proxy server relates it to the original request and forwards it on to the user.

To the user, the proxy server is invisible; all Internet requests and returned responses appear to be directly with the addressed Internet server. (The proxy is not quite invisible; its IP address has to be specified as a configuration option to the browser or other protocol program.)

What are the advantages of using a proxy server?

An advantage of using a proxy server is that its cache can serve all users. If one or more Internet sites are frequently requested, these are likely to be in the proxy’s cache, which will improve user response time. In fact, there are special servers called cache servers.

The functions of proxy, firewall, and caching can be in separate server programs or combined in a single package. Different server programs can be in different computers. For example, a proxy server may in the same machine with a firewall server or it may be on a separate server and forward requests through the firewall.

There are different types of proxy servers with different features, some are anonymous proxies, which are used to hide your real IP address and some are used to filter sites, which contain material that may be unsuitable for people to view.

When you connect to a web site, your true IP address will not be shown, but the proxy servers IP will, this does not mean that your completely anonymous. The proxy server will have logs of IP’s that used the proxy server and the times.

So why should you use a proxy?

You can use a proxy server if you have a child and wish to restrict the sites they are viewing, you will need to make sure you get the correct type of proxy because not all proxies filter sites. You can use it to protect yourself, it can be used to hide your IP which is useful because it means hackers can not get info about you when using it. They will only get the proxy servers IP. Proxy servers are not hard to set up, no hardware or software is needed, you just need to configure your browser to connect through it.

Some ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) make all their users use a proxy server, for example in the United Arab Emirates, the main ISP makes all users use a proxy server which blocks sites with unsuitable material. It does this using the meta tags in the HTML code used to make the web page. Some ISP’s may give you a choice so you can use one or not. If you want to use a proxy server there are many around with different functions, you just have to get the one that suits your needs best.

How to change the background of a drive

1. Open Command Prompt and set folder attribute to "system". Suppose there is a folder "Setup" in "D:\" drive, in which you want to set a wallpaper as background image. So give following command in Command Prompt:

attrib +s D:\Setup

It'll change the attribute to "system".

2. Now open Notepad and paste following code:

[ExtShellFolderViews]
{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC} = {BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}

[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
Attributes=1
IconArea_Image=path_of_the_wallpaper
IconArea_Text=0x00000000

Now change "path_of_the_wallpaper" to the exact path of the wallpaper which you want to set as background. Suppose the wallpaper is stored in "D:\Wallpaper\Image1.jpg", then the code will be as following:

[ExtShellFolderViews]
{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC} = {BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}

[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
Attributes=1
IconArea_Image=D:\Wallpaper\Image1.jpg
IconArea_Text=0x00000000

NOTE: If you copy the wallpaper in the same folder which you are editing, then you can simply put the wallpaper name in the file. e.g. if you copy the "Image1.jpg" file in "Setup" folder, then the code will be as following:

[ExtShellFolderViews]
{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC} = {BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}

[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
Attributes=1
IconArea_Image=Image1.jpg
IconArea_Text=0x00000000

"IconArea_Text" stands for the text color, you can change it to white, yellow, blue, black or any other color. You just need to know the hexa-decimal number of the color and then replace the code in "IconArea_Text" section. A few most used color codes are as follows:

Black - 0x00000000
White - 0x00FFFFFF
Green - 0x0000FF00
Blue - 0x00FF0000
Purple - 0x00C000C0
Red - 0x000000FF
Yellow - 0x0000FFFF
Indigo - 0x00FFFF00

3. Now save the file with name "Desktop.ini" (including quotes) and copy the file in the desired folder which is "Setup" in our example.

4. Thats it. Close the folder and re-open it. Now it should show the wallpaper as background.
